Neu5
Enables N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase activity. Involved in several processes, including neuron development; regulation of signal transduction; and wing disc pattern formation. Located in extracellular space. Is expressed in several structures, including CNS glial cell; ganglia; gut section; head epidermis primordium; and presumptive wing vein. Orthologous to human SULF1 (sulfatase 1) and SULF2 (sulfatase 2).
The gene Sulfated is referred to in FlyBase by the symbol Dmel\Sulf1 (CG6725, FBgn0040271). It is a protein_coding_gene from Dmel. It has 3 annotated transcripts and 3 polypeptides (1 unique). Gene sequence location is 3R:16310542..16339575. Its molecular function is described by: N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase activity; glycosaminoglycan binding. It is involved in the biological process described with 9 unique terms, many of which group under: anterior/posterior pattern specification; negative regulation of canonical Wnt signaling pathway; smoothened signaling pathway; wing disc dorsal/ventral pattern formation; cellular component organization or biogenesis. 27 alleles are reported. The phenotypes of these alleles manifest in: compartment; peripheral nervous system; dendrite; chemosensory system; larval tracheal system. The phenotypic classes of alleles include: phenotype; increased mortality during development; some die during pupal stage; increased mortality. Summary of modENCODE Temporal Expression Profile: Temporal profile ranges from a peak of moderately high expression to a trough of low expression. Peak expression observed within 00-18 hour embryonic stages, at stages throughout the pupal period.

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

Sulf1 is expressed in all provein regions in the wing imaginal disc.
Sulf1 is first detected in early first instar larvae in the central region of the wing pouch and in several spots located in the notum region of the disc. In the pouch, expression is further patterned during mid- to late- third instar stages. The domain in the central region of the wing pouch appears much broader. At late third instar larval stages, regionalization of the Sulf1 epxression domain occurs, defining stripes along the AP and DV axes reminiscent of provein domains L1 to L5. A lower level of staining is seen in the presumptive L3-L4 intervein region. Comparison to kn and dpp markers shows that expression is initially restricted to the anterior compartment but starting in mid-third instar larval stages extends to the posterior compartment. At the late third instar larval stage, Sulf1 is highly expressed in the L3 and L4 provein domains. In addition, expression is seen in L2 and L5 proveins and along the DV boundary.
Sulf1 is expressed at the morphogenetic furrow and in the central brain region in larvae. It is also expressed at high levels near the AP and DV compartment boundaries in wing discs.
Sulf1 displays weak and non-uniform staining in the lateral neurogenic ectoderm.

Please Note This section lists cDNAs and ESTs that fall within the genomic extent of the gene model, which may include cDNAs and ESTs of genes within introns, or of overlapping genes. Please see JBrowse for alignment of the cDNAs and ESTs to the gene model.
For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.
